Signs From Loved Ones in Spirit & How to Connect With Them
Nov 01, 2026
If you have ever heard a song at exactly the right moment, seen the same number three times in one day, or woken from a dream that felt too real to be just a dream, you may have wondered whether someone you love was trying to reach you. After more than 25 years of working as a medium & spiritual advisor, I can tell you that this question comes up in almost every conversation I have with someone who has lost a person they love. Most people ask it quietly, & many have already talked themselves out of what they noticed because it seemed too good to be true.
In this post, I want to walk you through the most common signs from loved ones in spirit, explain why those signs often feel stronger in early November, & share a few simple ways you can open the door to connection on your own. I will also explain what happens in a mediumship reading in case you have been curious about taking that step.
What Are the Most Common Signs From Loved Ones in Spirit?
Signs from loved ones usually arrive through the things you are most likely to notice, which is why they can look ordinary at first glance. They show up in your everyday world in the moments when your attention is soft enough to catch them. These are the ones I hear about most often.
Numbers, Songs & Meaningful Coincidences
Repeating numbers like 111, 222 or 444 are some of the most common signs people tell me about, along with a song that plays at the exact moment you were thinking of someone. Many people also describe finding a coin, a feather or an object that belonged to their loved one in a place where it makes no sense for it to be. One of these on its own can feel like a coincidence, & when the same kind of sign keeps repeating around the times you think of that person, it starts to feel like a message.
Dreams That Feel Real
Dreams are one of the clearest ways loved ones reach us, because when we sleep the busy thinking mind steps aside & it becomes easier to receive. A visit dream usually feels different from an ordinary dream, with brighter colors, a person who looks healthy & peaceful, a conversation that feels real, & a sense of comfort that stays with you after you wake. Many people tell me they could still feel a hug when they opened their eyes.
Birds, Butterflies & Other Visitors From Nature
Nature is a favorite messenger, with cardinals, hummingbirds, butterflies & dragonflies being the ones people mention most. An animal that appears at a meaningful moment, stays closer than usual or seems to look right at you can carry a message. After years of paying close attention, I have found that the timing matters more than the animal itself, so if a hummingbird shows up at the moment you were thinking about your grandmother, that timing is the sign.
Feelings, Scents & a Sense of Presence
Some signs come through your body. You might notice a sudden warmth beside you, a gentle touch on your shoulder, goosebumps, or the smell of a perfume, a cigar or a favorite meal when nothing nearby could explain it. Many people also describe a quiet sense of presence, a feeling that someone just walked into the room. These experiences come through what I call the Clairs, which are our spiritual senses. Clairsentience is feeling, claircognizance is knowing, clairaudience is hearing & clairvoyance is seeing, & most people have one or two that are stronger than the rest.
Why Do Signs Feel Stronger Around Día de los Muertos & All Souls Day?
Cultures around the world set aside the first days of November to remember the people who have passed. Día de los Muertos, All Saints Day on November 1st & All Souls Day on November 2nd come from different traditions, & they share the belief that the space between the living & those we have lost becomes thinner at this time of year.
After 25 years of this work, I notice that the messages that come through in sessions during November carry a clarity that feels different from other months, & people often tell me they have felt someone close to them more strongly in the weeks leading up to it. Part of that may be the way these traditions invite us to pause, remember & pay attention. When we slow down & turn our hearts toward someone we love, we become much easier for them to reach.
Families who celebrate Día de los Muertos build an ofrenda, an altar filled with photos, marigolds, favorite foods & candles, to welcome loved ones back. Any tradition, or none at all, can use this idea. I have prayed & meditated at my own altar for 25 years, & I have found that a small physical space set aside for remembering gives the heart a place to open.
How Can You Tell the Difference Between a Sign & a Coincidence?
Almost everyone asks me this, usually with a little doubt in their voice. It is a healthy question, & there are a few simple things you can look for.
The first is timing, since real signs tend to arrive when you are thinking about your loved one or in an emotional moment where you need comfort. The second is repetition, because a sign that shows up more than once in different forms is usually worth noticing. The third is how it feels in your body, as messages from loved ones in spirit tend to arrive with warmth, calm or a sense of recognition, so a sign that leaves you feeling afraid is worth setting aside. The fourth is personal meaning, which means the sign connects to something only you & that person shared, like a nickname, a place or an inside joke. A sign can be real with only one or two of these, so if it feels loving & keeps showing up, trust the part of you that recognized it.
How Can You Connect With a Loved One in Spirit at Home?
Opening the connection takes only a few gentle practices, & you can start any of them today. Each one helps you become more aware of the signs that are already arriving.
Ask for a Sign Out Loud
Speak to your loved one the way you would if they were sitting across from you. Tell them you miss them & ask them to show you they are near, & be specific if you want to, such as asking for a certain flower, number or song. Then let go of the need to force an answer & pay attention over the next few days, because signs often arrive in a form you did not expect.
Keep a Signs Journal
Write down every moment that feels like more than coincidence, including the date, what happened & how it felt. At the end of the week, read it back & notice what repeats. Over time you will see how your loved one tends to communicate with you, which makes it much easier to trust what you receive.
Create a Small Space to Remember Them
A shelf, a candle & a photo are all you need. Spend a few quiet minutes there each day, talk to them & notice what you feel. Many people find that a regular, quiet routine like this gives grief a place to go & invites more connection into daily life.
Practice a Few Minutes of Stillness
Sit quietly for five minutes, breathe slowly & invite your loved one to come close. Notice any thoughts, images, feelings or sensations that come up without judging them. Your spiritual senses grow stronger with gentle practice, much like a muscle.
What Happens in a Mediumship Reading?
If you have tried these practices & want a deeper connection, a mediumship reading can offer direct messages & validation from your loved ones. It helps to know what to expect, so here is how I work.
In a reading, I serve as a bridge between the Spiritual & Physical realms, using my spiritual senses to receive messages from the people you have lost. Readings take place by phone, on Zoom, or in person in Stoughton, WI, & you can choose one or more people to attend when you sign up. During the session, I may share details, memories, personality traits or words of comfort that help you recognize who is present. Clients often tell me they leave with a sense of peace & comfort.
I cannot control who comes through or what they say, & I never promise a specific result, so I invite people to arrive with an open heart. Mediumship also works alongside the care you receive from doctors & counselors rather than replacing it, & if your grief ever feels too heavy to carry, please reach out to a mental health professional or someone you trust.
Frequently Asked Questions About Signs From Loved Ones
Do signs from loved ones fade over time?
Many people notice more signs in the first months after a loss & fewer as grief settles, while others keep receiving them for years. A quieter stretch can simply mean the signs have become more subtle as you have grown more comfortable with them.
Can anyone receive signs from loved ones?
Yes. Everyone has spiritual senses, & the biggest difference between people is how much attention they give them. If you tend to notice feelings, dreams or small details, you are probably already receiving more than you realize.
What if I have not received any signs?
Grief can be loud, & when we are in pain it is harder to hear quiet messages. Try asking out loud, keep a journal for a few weeks & give yourself time. Many people are surprised by how much they notice once they start looking, & a mediumship reading can also help when you want a clearer connection.
